What the fresh-batch approach involves
The fresh-batch approach is a production method in which, instead of a single large stock, multiple smaller batches are produced, each manufactured shortly before shipment. Each batch is analysed and documented separately, rather than a large volume being stored for an extended period and distributed under a single, older analysis date.
Why smaller, fresh batches
A smaller batch size limits the time between production and analysis on one hand, and use in research on the other. This reduces the likelihood of compositional changes that can occur during prolonged storage, such as oxidation or other forms of chemical degradation. Because a batch is analysed and used relatively soon after production, the analytical result on the CoA more closely reflects the actual composition of the sample at the time of use.
Batch-specific documentation: a CoA per batch, on request
In the fresh-batch approach, each batch receives its own unique batch number and its own certificate of analysis, available on request. This CoA includes both an HPLC analysis, showing the purity percentage of that specific batch, and a mass spectrometry analysis, confirming the molecular weight of the main component. Because each batch is tested individually, the documentation differs per batch, even when consecutive batches have comparable specifications.
Traceability as the core of quality assurance
Batch-specific documentation makes it possible to link a research result directly to the analytical data of the exact batch used. This is relevant for traceability within a research setup, since deviations between batches, even of the same substance, can be traced back to the specific production and analytical data of that batch. A system of smaller, fresh batches with individual CoAs thus supports a consistent link between the physical sample and its analytical documentation, contributing to overall quality assurance within a laboratory setting.
