What is a CoA and how do you read research?

In short

A Certificate of Analysis (CoA) is the quality report for a single production batch. It shows purity (via HPLC) and identity (via mass spectrometry), checked against fixed limits. "Research use only" means: for laboratory research only, not for human use.

What does "research use only" mean?

Research use only, or RUO for short, means a compound is intended solely for laboratory and preclinical research. Not for human or animal consumption, not for treatment. The label also says something about the strength of the evidence: the compound has not been tested or approved as a medicine. It is research material, not a drug.

How to read a research source critically

Not every source is equally strong. These four questions let you quickly judge how much a study is worth.

  • Where was it published? A peer-reviewed journal with a DOI, or a record on PubMed, carries more weight than a blog or a sales page.
  • At what stage was it studied? There is a big difference between a test in a tube, a study in animals, and a study in people. A cell study is not evidence of an effect in humans.
  • Who, when, and how large? A large study repeated by another team carries more weight than a single small, one-off study.
  • Is it the original source? Refer to the study itself, not to what a webshop writes about it.

What is in a CoA?

A CoA belongs to one specific production run, also called a lot or batch. That lets you verify exactly the vial in your hand, not just "the product" in general. A good CoA usually lists:

  • the batch or lot number and the production date;
  • the amino-acid sequence and the molecular formula with its mass;
  • the measured purity and identity, each checked against a fixed acceptance limit.

Purity is measured with HPLC

HPLC stands for high-performance liquid chromatography. The technique separates a sample into its individual parts and measures what percentage is the desired peptide and how much is by-product. The purity required differs per study; the CoA shows the measured value for that one batch.

Identity is confirmed with mass spectrometry

Mass spectrometry weighs the molecule very precisely. If the measured mass matches the mass expected for the stated sequence, you have confirmation that it really is the right peptide. Purity and identity together tell you two things: how much of the good stuff is in there, and whether it is the good stuff at all.

Why a CoA per batch matters

Every production run can turn out slightly differently. A CoA tied to one batch lets you check that specific batch. A general quality claim without a batch number says a lot less. So always ask for the CoA of the batch you receive.

Did you know

  • HPLC measures purity; mass spectrometry confirms identity. You need both for a complete picture.
  • A CoA without a batch number is worth much less, because every run can turn out differently.
  • A cell study in a tube is not evidence of an effect in humans; always check the research stage.

Frequently asked questions

What does "research use only" mean?
That a compound is intended solely for laboratory and preclinical research, not for human or animal use. It has not been tested or approved as a medicine.
What is in a CoA?
A batch or lot number, the production date, the sequence, the molecular formula with mass, plus purity (HPLC) and identity (mass spectrometry), checked against fixed limits.
What is the difference between HPLC and mass spectrometry on a CoA?
HPLC measures purity, the percentage of the desired peptide. Mass spectrometry confirms identity, whether the measured mass matches the stated sequence.
Why must a CoA belong to a specific batch?
Because every production run can turn out slightly differently. Only a CoA with a batch number lets you verify that exact run.
