Reconstitution: preparing a peptide with bacteriostatic water
Lyophilised research peptides are dissolved before use in the lab, usually with bacteriostatic water. This note explains the basics.
What bacteriostatic water is
Bacteriostatic water is sterile water with 0.9 percent benzyl alcohol. The benzyl alcohol slows bacterial growth, so a dissolved solution stays usable in a research setting longer than with plain sterile water.
Dissolve gently
The liquid is added along the wall of the vial, not sprayed directly onto the powder. The vial is then left to stand or swirled softly. Do not shake, because peptides are sensitive to mechanical force.
Research use only
Reconstitution belongs to laboratory and research work. The information here is general and does not describe use on or in humans or animals.
